The right pillow keeps your head and neck in line with your spine for the position you actually sleep in. Most “bad pillow” complaints — waking with a stiff neck, constant re-fluffing, sleeping hot — come down to the wrong loft, the wrong fill, or a pillow that’s simply worn out. Start here, then dig into our reviews and guides below.
Start with your sleep position
- Side sleepers usually need the most loft (height) to fill the gap between ear and shoulder. Firmer, higher pillows tend to work best.
- Back sleepers generally do well with a medium loft that supports the curve of the neck without pushing the chin toward the chest.
- Stomach sleepers need the flattest, softest option — or sometimes no pillow under the head at all.
- Combination sleepers often prefer adjustable or shredded fills that can be reshaped as they move.
Pillow fill types at a glance
| Fill | Feel | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid memory foam | Slow-sinking, contouring, stable | Side and back sleepers who want consistent support | Can sleep warm; not adjustable |
| Shredded memory foam | Moldable, softer | Combination sleepers; anyone who likes to adjust loft | Fill can clump; may need fluffing |
| Latex | Springy, responsive | Sleepers who want support without the “sink” | Heavier; usually pricier |
| Down / feather | Soft, airy, squishy | Stomach and back sleepers who like a plush feel | Flattens overnight; allergy concerns for some |
| Down alternative | Soft, fluffy | Budget shoppers and allergy-prone sleepers | Loses loft faster than most fills |
| Buckwheat | Firm, moldable, breathable | Hot sleepers who like firm support | Noisy; heavy; takes getting used to |
When to replace a pillow
A common rule of thumb is every one to two years for fiber and down-alternative pillows, and somewhat longer for good memory foam or latex. Fold a fiber pillow in half: if it doesn’t spring back, it’s done. For foam, look for permanent dents, crumbling, or a noticeably flatter profile.
